Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya Achieves JCI Accreditation
SUBANG JAYA - Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya, the flagship private hospital under the Sime Darby Healthcare Group, has earned accreditation from Joint Commission International (JCI), the worldwide leader in improving the quality of health care.
Joint Commission International’s on-site evaluation of Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya occurred in October 2009 and was conducted by a team of international health care experts, including a doctor, nurse and administrator.
“Health care organizations around the world want to create environments that focus on quality, safety and continuous improvement,” says Paul vanOstenberg, senior executive director, Joint Commission International. “Accreditation meets this demand by stimulating continuous, systematic improvements in an organization’s performance and the outcomes of patient care. The community should be proud that Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya has made a commitment to quality and safety.”
“We sought accreditation because we want to provide the best care possible for our patients,” says Elaine Cheong, chief executive officer of Sime Darby Healthcare. “Incidently, Sime Darby Healthcare group’s vision is to become the gold standard healthcare provider of the region. Earning accreditation from Joint Commission International is another step towards excellence.”
Cheong notes that accreditation is attainable only through collaboration among all hospital staff members including doctors. “Providing high quality care is a team effort and one that gives both our employees and doctors a feeling of prestige to work in an accredited hospital.”
With this accreditation, Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya has become the first hospital in Selangor to meet the international health care quality standards for patient care and organization management.
JCI standards focus on the areas that most directly impact patient care. These include access to care, assessment of patients, infection control, patient and family rights, and education. Standards also address facility management and safety, staff qualifications, quality improvement, organizational leadership, and management of information.
The accreditation process is designed to accommodate specific legal, religious and cultural factors within a country. To ensure their international applicability, JCI standards were developed by a 16-member international task force, representing seven major world regions: Western Europe; the Middle East; Latin and Central America; Asia and the Pacific Rim; North America; Central and Eastern Europe; and Africa.
In addition to achieving the JCI accreditation, Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya also attained accreditation for its medical laboratory in October under the MS ISO 15189 standards for quality and competence. The Malaysian Standard is identical with ISO 15189 published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The accreditation granted to the hospital’s laboratory covers medical testing in the disciplines of cytogenetics, chemical pathology, haematology, histopathology, medical microbiology and virology. Sime Darby Medical Centre Subang Jaya’s laboratory is also the first centre to be accredited to MS ISO 15189 for Cytogenetics.
